Fibromyalgia is an age old problem that dates back many centuries. It is a condition that has muslce and joint pain that seems to persist without any identifiable reason. There are three specific things you should know about fibromyalgia. They are: what is fibromyalgia, what causes fibromyalgia, and what can I do about fibromyalgia.

So what is fibromyalgia? Fibro is a word that refers to connective tissue that cushions your joints. Myalgia is a word that is used to refer to pain in the muscles. So, fibromyalgia is a condition that causes pain in your connective tissue and muscles.

However, fibromyalgia is more than just pain in the muscle and joints. It causes many other symptoms as well. The primary symptoms are stiff aching muscles and pain, however, fatigue is a big problem as well. Fibromyalgia can cause certain distinct areas or points on the body to being tender to the touch. These are cleverly named tender points.

Some people who suffer from fibromyalgia also complain of heart palpitations, headaches, sleeping problems, fatigue, anxiety, depression, and more. The range of severity with fibromyalgia often fluctuates between flares and between different people. Some people are only mildly affected while others have their lives severely altered due to the severity of the symptoms.

Although fibromyalgia involves joint pain, doctors do not believe that this condition is a form of arthritis. It falls more in the category of inflammatory conditions.

The cause of fibromyalgia is not conclusive, yet there are many advances and studies being done that are getting closer to finding the cause or causes. Some believe that it can come from a past trauma to the body, others may think a certain type of virus may be responsible. Some think that a pervasive candida may be to blame, while others say that it could be from toxin build up. No matter the cause, there are some great studies being done to push fibromyalgia to the forefront of medicines eyes.

Although there isn’t a conclusive cause to fibromyalgia, treatment courses are available to help sufferers deal with their symptoms. Treatments that are natural and targeted at the symptoms have been shown to provide significant relief. This along with the progression of medicine and studies targeted toward fibromyalgia, provide needed hope for solutions and relief of fibromyalgia symptoms.

There is hope out there. Treatment can work for you and there is pain and fatigue relief that will help you in your battle to stomp out fibromyalgia symptoms.

Fibromyalgia seems to be a growing problem for many people these days with around 5 million sufferers in the US alone. With no as yet identified cause or cure, self help for fibromyalgia is becoming a very popular topic.
Herbs can be used as a natural fibromyalgia treatment. These substances can relieve symptoms by decreasing inflammation, enhancing the production of necessary hormones, giving a boost to the immune system and easing pain. Below are some of the common herbal treatments – not all have been proven in the treatment of fibromyalgia, but they may offer relief for some.
• St. John’s wort is known a natural substitute for prescription antidepressants. This drug positively affects the adrenal gland hormones to aid in managing stress. St. John’s wort also influences the nerves and is good for nerve pains. It also fights virus. A dose of 100mg three times a day has shown to improve some fibromyalgia symptoms.
(Caution: Do not take if with prescription antidepressants.)
• Siberian ginseng is an energy boosting herb that can help deal with the fatigue brought about by fibromyalgia. It’s recommended that you select an extraction with 0.8 percent eleutherosides and take 100 -300mg a day. Taking siberian ginseng too close to bedtime can cause insomnia and take care not to exceed the recommended dosage. After six or eight weeks take a one to two week break, after which you may use the herb again for another six to eight weeks.
(Caution: do not take with heart or blood pressure medications)
• Turmeric assists in reduction of inflammation and pain. You can take this in capsule form three times a day, or alternatively try dissolving half a teaspoon of turmeric powder in water.
• Garlic detoxifies and builds the immune system. Consider a daily intake of 5,000 mcg of allicin three a day. Aged garlic like Kyolic is even better.
(Warning: large amounts of garlic can hinder blood clotting abilities).
• Ginkgo biloba enhances circulation of the blood and may improve the memory function of the brain, although this is not proven.
• Devil’s claw root is a natural alternative to anti-inflammatory medicines, and can be used to cure rheumatic disorders. It also acts as an effective analgesic.
• Likewise, Willow bark, from which aspirin is derived from, is an anti-inflammatory and serves as an effective pain reliever.
• Licorice root offers similar benefits to cortisone, but without the risk of the artificially produced counterpart.
(Caution: do not use if suffering from high blood pressure)
• Dandelion decreases pain and invigorates the connective tissue. You should try for an intake of 1 tbsp. juice or 1 cup tea two times a day from four to a maximum of six weeks.
• Skullcap and valerian root enhance deep sleep.
• Teas brewed from dandelion, burdock root, and red clover may facilitate treatment for fibromyalgia by purifying the bloodstream and building the immune system. Mixed up or used as herbal teas, you’ll want to try for an intake of 4 to 6 cups every day.
• Local applications of cayenne powder with oil of wintergreen can alleviate muscle pain. Cayenne has capsaicin an ingredient that prevents the release of neurotransmitters responsible for relaying pain signals that communicate pain sensations. For every 1 part cayenne powder, use 3 parts of oil of wintergreen.
• Grape-seed and Pine-bark extracts are natural anti-inflammatory medicines. These alleviate pain. A good intake is 50 milligrams, two or three times a day.
•Ginger is a great substitute to aspirin to alleviate pain. You can take this as a powdered supplement or grate ginger root and take as a tea.

People with fibromyalgia have severe pain and measurable pain signals in their brains. For healthy people to feel the same level of pain the squeeze’s force must be doubled. In such cases the pain signals appears in different pain areas.

More than 2 percent of Americans with fibromyalgia are women. The researchers used a super-fast form of MRI brain imaging called functional MRI or fMRI to correlate subjective pain sensation with objective views of brain signals. A recent study offers the first objective method for corroborating what fibromyalgia patients report they feel, and what’s going on in their brains. A road map of the areas of the brain showed that patients with fibromyalgia are less active when they feel pain.

An unique opportunity to look at the neurobiology underlying tenderness was given by fMRI technology which is a hallmark of fibromyalgia. Some pathologic process is making the patients more sensitive. There’s a neurobiological amplification of their pain signals. Further results were presented at the ACR annual meeting. The project will continue at UMHS, joining other fibromyalgia research.

In the ancient history fibromyalgia was diagnosed as a chronic disease, characterized by tenderness and stiffness all over the body as well as fatigue, headaches, gastrointestinal problems and depression. The disease interferes with work, family and personal life. It is well known that women are predisposed more than males to fibromyalgia, which appears in most cases during childbearing years. A classification criteria for fibromyalgia in 1990 helps doctors diagnose it and rule out other chronic pain conditions.

The existence of fibromyalgia says to be rooted more in psychological and social factors than in physical, biological causes. Neuroscientists have begun to use brain scan technology to identify the areas of the normal human brain that become most active during pain. Some studies assessed the blood flow in those areas in fibromyalgia patients during baseline brain scans. A new study use both high-speed scanning and a painful stimulus.

Fibromyalgia patients and healthy control subjects had their brains scanned for more than 10 minutes while a small, piston -controlled device applied precisely calibrated, rapidly pulsing pressure to the base of their left thumbnail. Painful and non-painful levels had been set for each patient prior to scan and the pressures were varied over time.

It only took a mild pressure to produce self-reported feelings of pain in the fibromyalgia patients while other patients tolerated the same pressure with little pain. The mild pressure produced measurable brain responses in areas that process the sensation of pain. But the same kind of brain responses weren’t seen in control subjects until the pressure on their thumb was more than doubled.

In both patients and control subjects the brain activity increased in the same areas and were striking differences too. The activity in 12 areas of the brains at patients who feel pain from mild pressure had increased, while the activity in two areas had increased at the control subjects feeling the same pressure. The rating and the number of brain areas activated when the pressure on the control subjects’ thumbs was increased. Only eight of the areas were the same as those in patients’ brains. At some patients there are some areas that were activated but not in controls and some areas that stayed “quiet” in them.

Even fibromyalgia causes pains many improved treatments may help the patients to recover.

There are a number of treatment options and one gaining in popularity is fibromyalgia and reiki.
Fibromyalgia is a common chronic disease affecting millions of people worldwide – with women mostly targeted by this illness. In the United States alone, studies indicate that fibromyalgia affects 3 to 6 million Americans, afflicting women – on average – 8 times more than men.
As pain is mainly associated with fibromyalgia, an age-long natural method for treating pain-related illness known as Reiki is rapidly gaining a popular following among many fibromyalgia patients due to its therapeutic and natural healing benefits.
So, just what are the healing benefits of Reiki and how can they help someone with fibromyalgia?
Reiki primarily endorses healing through natural ‘touch’ therapy and self-healing. This healing benefit also contributes to relieving stress and invokes a positive disposition in fibromyalgia patients, thereby relieving anxiety and depression.
Reiki is a traditional Asian form of therapeutic treatment coined from two Japanese terms, ‘rei’ meaning ‘a higher degree of power and universal force’ and ‘ki’ for ‘life force’, through which healing is induced by ‘light touch’ patterns. Literally by the placement of the Reiki master’s hands near or above the patient’s body during the process.
Reiki uses ‘touch’ therapy by using specific hand positions and patterns that corrects and improves energetic imbalances in the human body to restore energy levels, improve health conditions and relieve emotional stress.
Reiki has actually been practiced for thousands of years in Asia, predominantly by Japanese and Chinese spiritual monks, which over the course of time may have been disregarded due to medical and technological advancements, specifically with the introduction of chemical-based medicines to treat diseases, limiting the practice of Reiki.
During ancient times, the healing benefits of Reiki ranged from the treatment of debilitating diseases like lupus, joint inflammations and even terminal illnesses, but as time progressed, the exact science of Reiki has never been exhaustively and comprehensively passed on to generations.
It was only during the late 19th century that Reiki’s natural healing benefits was resurrected by a Buddhist monk and teacher named Dr. Mikao Usui, who studied the ancient therapeutic practice and adopted the method to cure his patients.
The natural healing benefits of Reiki so captivated Japanese-American Hawayo Takata, who trained under a Reiki master in Japan back in the 1930′s, and introduced the practice to the West. Reiki was used to treat illnesses ranging from cardiovascular diseases, insomnia and impotence, however, Reiki took a backseat as an alternative treatment since only very few scientific studies have come out documenting its success stories during that time.
To read about other natural remedies to help you overcome fibromyalgia sign up for the free newsletter below.
Currently, Reiki is firmly taking a strong foothold as an alternative treatment for many diseases, including fibromyalgia treatment and its popularity is spawned by the many positive testimonials that it has generated.
The healing benefits of Reiki are more than just a therapeutic method that helps in the treatment of pain and stress-related diseases. It is reminiscent of the time when conditions were not just treated by herbal remedies or alchemic concoctions, but the human body was regarded as a tool that has a mechanism to heal itself from ailments.

Fibromyalgia is a common and prevalent condition. It is conservatively estimated that two percent of Americans suffer from fibromyalgia either slightly or severely, but in fact, the number may be even higher. The most prominent symptom of this disease is widespread pain which differs from other kinds of pain, such as that caused by wounds, as it will not become inflamed. The pain is mainly located in the muscles, ligaments and tendons, but pain is not the only symptom of fibromyalgia. Other symptoms such as stiffness, trouble sleeping, fatigue, irritable bowel syndrome and chronic headaches are also present with fibromyaliga.

Fibromyalgia is a very disruptive disorder, and especially when outbreaks of pain occur, is can be unbearable. Fibromyalgia is typically treated with pain-relieving medication or with antidepressants when it is severe. The effectiveness of these remedies varies depending on the individual and the severity, as the symptoms are diverse and vary from patient to patient. Different cases require different treatments. Much research has verified that the natural treatment of fibromyalgia(http://www.mitamins.com/disease/Fibromyalgia-Syndrome.html) can improve the condition. Examples of natural treatment include special exercises, or natural supplements targeted to address pain and muscle damage.

Exercise could be just what you are looking for!

Exercising while in pain seems a little absurd, yet recent studies indicate that patients experiencing fibromyalgia who participate in an individualized exercise program will have better moods and be in better physical shape than these who don’t. After the exercise, pain may decrease considerably and overall quality of life can also be greatly enhanced. A fibromyalgia specialist once said about the exercise program: “it may seem counterintuitive, but exercise will help break the pain cycle”. Physical activities have a significant effect on many of the hormones associated with the central nervous system.

However, taking “three steps forward, two steps back”, so to speak, is not advisable. The longer your exercise program lasts, the more effective. Stop-and-start exercise programs may not help at all. You need to focus on consistency. Studies also show that exercise can also improve other complications associated with fibromyalgia such as depression, sleep problems and fatigue. The causes of fibromyalgia are still unknown; however, recent research indicates that the central nervous system is at the root of the problem.

Treatments for fybromyalgia(http://www.mitamins.com/disease/Fibromyalgia-Syndrome.html) should be individualized and custom-made as the symptoms will vary between patients, and no single treatment can apply to all patients. Nowadays the natural treatment of fibromyalgia has become popular, and has been adopted by many patients. The good news is that natural treatment has been found to be very effective in many cases. Included in this supplement for the treatment of Fibromyalgia Syndrome are components that help normalize the nervous system, as well as a combination of nutrients for total health and recovery.

Follow tips mentioned above on fibromyalgia treatment(http://www.mitamins.com/disease/Fibromyalgia-Syndrome.html) and you can bet your pain will more bearable and your life more livable. These suggestions along with a natural treatment may perhaps be more effective than prescription drugs.

What is Fibromyalgia?

Sometimes referred to as “fibro” and “the invisible disease,” fibromyalgia is a very debilitating that can strike anyone. Approximately three to six percent of the U.S. population suffers from this condition, which causes sufferers chronic pains and aches. The chronic pain and fatigue associated with this disease causes sufferers a general discomfort and a loss of the ability to function normally.

The earmarks of fibromyalgia are muscular aches and pains, stiffness of joints, and general fatigue. Most who suffer from fibromyalgia are faced with disturbed sleep, making it almost impossible to get a good night’s rest. This only makes the general aches and pains of the disease that much worse.

What are the Symptoms of Fibromyalgia?

Fibromyalgia causes widespread, chronic pain. No area of the body will remain untouched by the effects of fibro, though the pain is most commonly found in the back, shoulders, neck, and hands. Those who suffer from fibromyalgia have complained of a tingling or burning sensation, and numbness. Many who have been struck with fibro have experienced sensitized skin and nerve pain.

Other symptoms of fibro include impaired memory and concentration, anxiety, depression, dizziness, ringing in the ears, terrible headaches, and irritable bowels and bladder. Fibromyalgia most commonly causes sufferers a general, overall fatigue brought on by general pain, muscle ache, and sleeplessness.

What Causes Fibromyalgia?

Fibromyalgia is a disease that is the focus of much intense scientific study. There are many theories about the causes of fibro, and in many cases it is the result of some trauma that sufferers have experienced. But there is much still unknown about this horrible disease, and modern medicine has still to pinpoint the cause of fibromyalgia. There is no known method of prevention. Scientific research indicates that some people may be genetically predisposed to fibromyalgia, but nothing has been accurately proven.

Is There a Cure For Fibromyalgia?

There is no known cure for fibromyalgia. In fact, as there is much still unknown about this disease and as there are no accurate tests for fibromyalgia, it is very hard to be diagnosed with this disease. Many doctors remain largely unfamiliar with the effects of fibro, and many doctors remain steadfast that fibromyalgia is not a true disease or physical ailment.

However, as awareness of fibromyalgia grows, new treatments are being explored. Sufferers of fibro have more options today, and as scientists learn more there is great hope that a true cure will be discovered in the future.

What Treatments are Available To Those Who Suffer From Fibromyalgia?

Over-the-counter pain medications can help to relieve some of the chronic pain caused by fibromyalgia. Most doctors will prescribe pain medication and antidepressants to those who suffer from fibro, and prescribe a light exercise regime to keep muscles loose and limber.

Daily stretching exercises, like yoga, can help alleviate some of the muscle pain associated with this disease. Hollistic methods and medicines are very popular with fibromyalgia sufferers. Proper diet and nutrition are very important to those who suffer from this disease, and there is a focus on eating healthy and treating the body very well.

As fibromyalgia causes sleeping problems, doctors have stressed the importance that those who have been diagnosed with fibro get plenty of healthy sleep. Plenty of sleep will lessen the fatigue and exhaustion that those with fibromyalgia almost constantly feel, and alleviate some of the pain in the muscles and joints.

What’s Next?

With no known cure, and no way to reverse the effects of fibromyalgia, sufferers are forced to live with the disease for the remainder of their lives – or until a cure is found. Treatment must remain strict, and diet and exercise programs followed explicitly. Those who suffer from fibromyalgia will not be able to function at any high-level capacity. They will not be able to engage in strenuous activities, or even to hold a full-time job in most cases. But by maintaining treatment and living inside the realm of their physical capacity, those who suffer from fibro greatly reduce the pain that they experience. When more is understood about this disease, and scientists are able to come up with a comprehensive cure, perhaps fibromyalgia will finally be wiped out.

Tender points are specific places on the body; on the neck, shoulders, back, hips, and upper and lower extremities; where people with fibromyalgia feel pain in response to slight pressure.Symptoms Of FibromyalgiaA common symptom of Fibromyalgia is muscular and joint pain for over three months. There can be stiffness, aching and tenderness around joints, muscles, tendons, and ligaments. The pain is usually bilateral, appearing above as well as below the waist. The pain may also occur within the muscles and the points where ligaments attach muscles to bones. There may be extreme tenderness in specific areas such as joints The level of pain may vary from day to day. Sometimes it may be from head to toe and sometimes it may be more in one area. Every day can be a new experience in pain. You may experience muscle weakness. This might affect such things as your ability to open lids on jars. You may find yourself having no strength in your arms or legs. It’s common for people with fibromyalgia to experience heightened sensitivities to things such as noise, bright lights, smell or touch. You may get micgraine headaches, insomnia or facial pain. You may experience numbness or tingling in your arms or legs, restless leg syndrome, indigestion, nausea or balance problems. Widespread muscular and joint pain for over three months (such as aching, stiffness, and tenderness around joints, muscles, tendons, and ligaments). Pain may appear in one or more locations at the same time and also in many different parts of the body. The pain is bilateral in that it appears above and below the waist. The pain is located within the muscles themselves, as well as the points where ligaments attach muscles to bones.Besides pain, other symptoms include extreme fatigue, sleep deprivation, headaches and depression. Though neither fatal nor permanently damaging, FMS is so debilitating, it has a profound effect on the families, friends and employers of sufferers. Most are seriously affected in their job performance and one quarter are unable to work at all.Fibromyalgia Treatment OptionsMedications that boost your body’s level of serotonin and norepinephrine (neurotransmitters that modulate sleep, pain, and immune system function) are commonly prescribed in low doses for the treatment of fibromyalgia. Examples include amitriptyline, cyclobenzaprine, and Cymbalta.Ultram may help with the treatment of fibromyalgia pain, although stronger opioids may be needed for addressing moderate to severe pain. A clean diet will exclude coffee, red meat, processed food, and other difficult digestible foods, but include a multitude of fresh fruits and vegetables. Vitamin supplements are also helpful. Ginger, ginseng, ginkgo biloba, and garlic are also helpful. One’s daily exercise will include various forms of aerobic exercise, with getting the heart rate to good levels, for 20 minutes or more.Fibromyalgia can be hard to treat. It’s crucial to find a doctor who is familiar with the disorder and its treatment. Many family physicians, general internists, or rheumatologists can treat Fibromyalgia. Rheumatologists are doctors who specialize in arthritis and other conditions that affect the joints or soft tissues.

Fibromyalgia is otherwise called Muscular Rheumatism, Tension Myalgia or Fibromyositis. This fibromyalgia is a syndrome where the patient suffers from chronic muscle pain. This is complicated syndrome wherein the pain can be all over the body or just in certain muscles around the joints. The majority who are affected by this are women over the age of 30, who suffer from pain in the neck, back and shoulders. They would generally complain of stiffness, tenderness, and pain in the joints. It may seem that the problem is with the joints, but in fact it is a muscular pain that causes the problem. This can appear in anyone including children and men of all races and is the second most common disorder as per rheumatologists.

Due to the steady pain, the person tends to show signs of stress, sleeplessness, extreme moodiness, and even depression. This may not be constant but can escalate with the pain and uneasiness. The cause of this may be due to certain pain stimulating chemicals in the body and the increase or reduction of serotonin in the body making it sensitive to pain. Fibromyalgia causes the pain to be centralized, wherein you feel the pain elsewhere in the brain or spinal cord. This can be triggered with just a slight touch or even external factors like light and sound. It may seem psychological due to this, but in reality the pain is genuine and caused due to these factors.

There is no specific recommended diet for fibromyalgia but a healthy diet rich in vitamins and minerals can certainly help in coping with the illness. Magnesium rich vegetables are recommended for patient’s suffering from fibromyalgia. Cutting down on wheat and dairy products, having food rich in B12 and proteins, avoiding food with yeast and preservatives can also help. Caffeine, aerated drinks, chocolates and tea can be not only healthier but also reduce the symptoms of fibromyalgia. Turmeric is a powerful antiseptic and analgesic, 400-500 mg of turmeric everyday can help reduce inflammation and heal the tender skin. Ginger is also effective in relieving pain in the body. Ginger juice can be mixed with some honey or lemon juice and had as a refreshing drink.

You need to have food that reduces your anxiety levels. Cutting down on coffee can help you sleep better and open up ways to better health as well. Dairy products can be avoided, as they would trigger the irritable bowel syndrome that commonly affects fibromyalgia patients. Dairy products tend to increase anxiety in some patients and have a negative impact on the nervous system. Having whole grain diet affects some who complain of insomnia and muscle tensing. It is better to avoid it since the components are high in phytic acid and subsequently reduce zinc absorption in the system. Plenty of fruits, vegetables and nuts are recommended in the diet, as they are rich in magnesium.

Saturated fats in the diet can help reduce anxiety even though they tend to make you put on weight. Research has shown that the anxiety levels in the person decreased with the increase in cholesterol levels in the person. Spices tend to increase anxiety; hence, a less spicy diet can have calming effect, as it does not stimulate the body or the mind. Acidic food can reduce the absorption of magnesium, which helps relax the muscles. When there is a magnesium deficiency, the muscles tend to get cramped and tense. Plenty of vegetable juices and soups along with coconut water or any fresh juice can be very refreshing and healthy. Just the simple green salad with lemon juice dressing can be full of the necessary vitamins.

Patients with Fibromyalgia symptoms should avoid vegetables like broccoli, okra, potatoes, and cabbage. They should make it a routine to sleep early in order to avoid stress and fatigue. Some of the patients who suffer from this prolonged joint pain can be allergic to wheat. A gluten free diet is recommended for them, foods that can be avoided are high fat dairy products, fried foods, red meat etc. Research has shown that food rich in sodium and fried stuff can aggravate the pain and inflammation. As mentioned there no specific diet for fibromyalgia, you could try each one and decide which one suits you best as health food and as a way to nursing yourself back to health.
